Tips for caring for and maintaining uniforms

A uniform is essentially everyday clothing. That’s why it’s necessary to adopt a series of care practices to maintain the garments’ condition and appearance. After all, uniforms are worn and washed much more frequently than other items, and are therefore more susceptible to fading, stains, and wear.

In general, uniform care deserves special attention compared to other clothing because uniforms are provided by the company. It’s important to ensure your appearance at work is as clean and presentable as possible, always aligned with the organization’s standards.

In today’s article, we’ll list some tips to help you care for uniforms—and to teach your team to do the same.

Here are some tips we put together for uniform care and maintenance in daily life:

1 – It all starts with washing

How you wash directly affects the garments’ conservation and durability. Cleaning can damage the fabric; however, it’s possible to keep uniforms clean and in good condition by following a few simple steps.

  • Start by preparing the garment: unfold sleeves and cuffs, unbutton buttons, lift collars, and empty all pockets. This ensures the piece is washed thoroughly;
  • Check the care label recommendations: some fabrics are naturally more sensitive. Before washing a piece for the first time, always check the symbols on the label—they contain essential guidance for proper washing;
  • Avoid hot water: the ideal water temperature depends on the material, but as a rule, never exceed 40ºC. Thicker fabrics may tolerate warm water, but too much heat can damage texture and colors and may cause staining on other clothes;
  • Use mild detergent: to prevent stains or odors, prefer neutral products aimed at cleaning and decontamination;
  • Be careful with bleach on colored garments: always read the labels of products you use. Common bleach (chlorine-based) can fade and stain fabric colors and accelerate wear. Also avoid mixing multiple shades in one wash—separate light and dark items;
  • Don’t soak: soaking clothes for too long can compromise fibers and fade color. If you stain the uniform, wash the area immediately with water and mild detergent so the dirt doesn’t set into the fabric.

2 – Dry properly

Because it involves heat, drying can also damage garments. That’s why it’s recommended to find the best way to dry your fabrics.

  • Instead of using a dryer, prefer a clothesline: it deforms the fabric less and allows the garment to stay stretched, helping all water evaporate. You can also check tips to dry clothes faster here;
  • Avoid direct sunlight: sun exposure can fade uniforms. So hang clothes in a shaded place. If you can’t avoid direct sunlight, dry the pieces inside out;
  • Hang correctly: to avoid damaging texture and fit, hang pieces fully stretched and consider using hangers for shirts and t-shirts. This helps preserve garment integrity.

3 – Be careful to avoid wrinkles

If you hang garments properly and avoid dryers, uniforms will have fewer marks and creases. Even so, some more sensitive fabrics may wrinkle. If you need to iron your uniform, pay attention to a few precautions.

  • Iron with a clothes iron: but never exceed 150°C;
  • Iron inside out: this helps avoid damaging prints. During the process, always avoid areas with reflective strips or prints.

4 – Store in a suitable place

When storing clean pieces for next use, choose an easily accessible area in your wardrobe.

  • Dry and clean place: this prevents odors and stains;
  • Mind the details: watch out for holes or loose buttons and repair items whenever necessary.

By taking good care of uniforms, your team ensures they will always be well-dressed and aligned with company standards—while increasing garment durability and creating a positive first impression for customers and partners. Employees will feel better and more willing to perform daily activities.

Even with high-quality, durable fabrics, replacement with new pieces should happen at least once a year. For that, it’s important to understand the ideal kit of pieces for each employee, which directly impacts having clean clothes always available and the durability of items.

Generally, the suggested kit includes 3 pants, 4 to 5 shirts, and 2 cold-weather pieces, which can vary between a jacket or sweater. This ensures the whole team is well-presented, wearing clothing in consistent tones and good-quality fabrics.
